The Benefits of Kegel Exercises for Women Over Fifty

In the case of the pelvic muscles, this exercise is particularly crucial as weakened pelvic muscles can lead to various other conditions including pelvic prolapse and urinary incontinence. The benefits of Kegel exercises therefore include preventing or minimizing these conditions. This is especially true for women over 50, who tend to have more issues with weakened pelvic muscles than their younger counterparts.
There are many conditions that can cause weakening of the pelvic muscles, including pregnancy and childbirth, aging, and daily stress. You can't necessarily avoid these triggers, but you can repair the damage done to the pelvic muscles with Kegel exercises. These exercises entail contracting and releasing of the pelvic muscles at regular intervals. Some people use vaginal weights and other aids to facilitate Kegels, but they can be done by anyone at any time with no external aids whatsoever.
How to do the exercises
You simply need to contract the muscles that you would normally use to prevent yourself from urinating. Make sure that it is your vagina and anus that you feel contracting and not the stomach muscles so that you are sure to reap the benefits of Kegel exercises. Hold the position for about five counts and then slowly release. Repeat this hold and release cycle at least 5 to 7 times to begin with. Once you get used to doing them, you can increase your reps.
So what exactly can women over 50 get out of Kegel exercises?
First and foremost, with stronger pelvic muscles your body will able to control urination better, meaning you won't have to worry about embarrassing leaks. This can be a very big concern for older women but it is easily controlled with just a few minutes of exercise a day.
Another one of the benefits of Kegel exercises is preventing pelvic prolapse. This is a condition that occurs when the pelvic muscles are too weak to keep the organs in the pelvic region in the proper position. As organs shift or sag, they are no longer able to function properly and this can lead to serious and even life threatening complications.
Making Life More Pleasurable
While those are the two most prominent reasons that Kegel exercises are recommended for women over 50, there is another benefit as well. Many women have noticed an improvement in sexual response after doing Kegels, perhaps because stronger pelvic muscles allow for more vigorous participation in sexual activity. This holds true at any age, so women over 50 can benefit as well as anyone.
Kegels are a simple and proven method for combating one of the more uncomfortable and embarrassing effects of aging, so why wouldn't you want to take advantage? Just a few minutes a day can make a huge difference and allow women over 50 to continue living a full, rich life.
